Charlie New holds a Masters of Arts in Counselling from Singapore. Leaving behind a career in dental work, Charlie dedicates himself into a work that gives hope to others. With a passion to reach out to youths and young adults, Charlie has experience journeying with individuals who have struggled with anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction and more. He has extensive experience in working closely with male youth and young adults. His counselling approach is primarily informed by Narrative Therapy framework, which offers a collaborative re-authoring process to help individuals uncover their untapped strengths and skills from their life narratives, and to help them develop a more resilient identity with greater personal agency. Charlie draws upon approaches from other counselling modalities such as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) to aid in his therapy work.
Charlie is a strong believer in each person’s unique innate potential to learn, to grow and to gain wisdom and strength from their own life experiences. This has guided him in his counselling approach, where he strives to create a safe space for his clients to clarify personal values, to weigh out the costs and benefits of personal change, and to collaborate in the development of treatment goals and outcomes. Charlie loves starting the day with his wife over a good traditional breakfast at local coffeeshop - teh-c kosong and dim sum sparks joy!
Successful Client Stories
Charlie has helped an upper primary school boy who was struggling with cultural adjustment. His parent had recently been outstationed to work in Singapore. Unable to cope with the transitional stress, the boy had anger outbursts specifically when stressed trying to meet the demands of his homework. He was generally anxious in making friends in school. Through counselling, client saw improvement with Charlie helping him notice his emotional triggers and guiding him to scale his emotions and monitoring how his level of emotions and the connection with his body. Gaining mastery of thought-body-emotion-action exercises and present-moment mindfulness work had greatly increased his ability to make good decisions for himself, particularly in handling frustrating and anger provoking situations.
Another client Charlie has worked with was a middle-age man who had constant conflict with his wife due to his drinking habits. After a personalised assessment, Charlie helped his client through narrative therapy approach to become aware of the unresolved grief of losing one of his parents at an early age that was effecting his expectations within his marriage, leading to drinking as an avoidance behaviour. Drawing from Gottman couple therapy approach, Charlie helped client recognise unhelpful patterns in resolving conflicts that he has learnt from his family. Instead of avoiding, client has learnt to communicate intentionally with his wife. Through a joint-forgiveness process, client is able to resolve conflict with less blame, less use of alcohol and more commitment to moving towards his and their shared values in the marriage.
